Girls’ Day at the Startup Incubator Berlin

This year, the Startup Incubator Berlin, the founding center of HWR Berlin, is once again hosting a Girls’ Day!

This year’s theme is:

How do I become an entrepreneur & how does prototyping work via 3D scan & printing?

After the welcome, we’ll kick things off with a Design Thinking workshop. Your task will be to develop a prototype. The theme is: “Design a phone holder” (one that doesn’t exist yet). Afterwards, you will “produce” your product in clay in our workshop and learn the basics of 3D scanning and 3D printing. You will also find out how to best plan the founding of your own company and have the opportunity to meet our female founders from the program.

We will send your clay product to you later as a 3D print. This will take approximately 4 weeks.

We have 8 spots available for participants aged 14 and up. Register at:

https://www.girls-day.de/.oO/Show/hochschule-fuer-wirtschaft-und-recht-berlin.2/berlin/girlsday-2025-wie-werde-ich-unternehmerin-wie-funktioniert-prototyping-via-3d-scan-druck

We look forward to a productive day.

The Startup Incubator Berlin started its new support program EXIST Women with a batch of ten impressive female founders which had been selected at the Pitch Night in January. Their startup ideas range from AI solutions, Tunesian product imports, high-end e-commerce or SAAS solutions up to a health app and an institute focusing on diversity management.

We are proud to have strong partners with the Berliner Sparkasse and WLounge as well as the Business Angel Club Berlin Brandenburg e.V. to support us with the program. In addition, we collaborate with other universities in Berlin and share our events and workshops for female founders.

To extend our support beyond our participants in the EXIST Women programm, we dedicate our two-week Lean Startup Sprint (February 20th – March 1st, 2024) to future female founders and host a female-only edition. The free program includes several workshops, coaching, peer learning and a UX-Testing. You will learn all about prototyping, marketing and branding, “Attitude as a Super Power” or financial planning.

All female founders out there are very much invited to join our network! Register for the free Lean Startup Sprint right away:

Looking Back at the Water Innovation Challenge

At the end of the year, we are pleased to give you a brief retrospective and status update on the ongoing Water Innovation Challenge:

At the beginning of the year, the IHK Berlin and the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin launched the ‘Water Innovation Challenge Berlin’. Initially, extensive interviews were conducted with stakeholders from the business community, from which problem statements and challenges on the topic of “Sustainable Water Management” emerged.

In the subsequent cooperation and transfer formats, stakeholders from business, research, and society were able to network and develop joint projects.

Thanks to the newly gained cooperation partners, the Berlin University Network “Zukunft findet Stadt“, Berlin Partner, and the Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin gGmbH, it was possible to initiate a diverse range of events and projects. We would like to briefly introduce a few selected ones:

Kick-off Event “Water Innovation Challenge”

At a kick-off and networking event on October 11 at HWR Berlin, interested stakeholders from business and research were able to meet and exchange ideas in several working groups on the previously identified focus topics of Sponge City, Legionella, and Water Reuse.

Innovation Work Retreat (IWR)

In a two-day workshop, business and practice partners (including Berliner Wasserbetriebe) and researchers (BHT, HTW, HWR) approached the topic of Legionella in an interdisciplinary manner and jointly discussed approaches to problem-solving. The result: an agreement on a research proposal to explore the topic in greater depth. The IWR is a format of the transfer project “Zukunft findet Stadt”.

Research Projects & Thesis Papers

Small and medium-sized as well as large companies are involved. Discussions and initial implementations of research proposals and thesis papers are underway and ongoing on topics such as water reuse in hydrogen electrolysis, tracing wastewater flows, and the potential for their recycling. Here, “trao – die Transfer-Roadshow”, another format of “Zukunft findet Stadt”, is being utilized.

A first major research proposal for the establishment of a real-world laboratory has already been submitted. This concerns the testing of multiple uses of urban agri-photovoltaic areas for integrative and local agricultural, energy, and mobility solutions including irrigation concepts.

Student Projects

As part of the module “Engagement for Sustainability and Social Responsibility”, six student teams from HWR Berlin developed innovative solution approaches to questions posed by three practice partners in a semester project using Service Design / Design Thinking methods. As part of the concept development, the students conducted various interviews and on-site visits. The extensively prepared results presentation before the three project partners, as well as further in-depth discussions, took place on December 1 at HWR Berlin’s Campus Lichtenberg.

Startup Challenge ‘Sustainable Water Management’

For 2024, the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, together with Kompetenzzentrum Wasser gGmbH, is planning a startup challenge format in which Berlin startup teams & prospective founders will develop innovative prototypes & concepts addressing challenges from practice partners in the field of ‘sustainable water management’. If you would like to participate as a challenge provider or sponsor, please feel free to contact us.

We would like to thank all those involved for their ideas and the strong collaboration thus far.
If your company is not yet in contact with us but might be interested, please feel free to get in touch. Contact: Sandra Thumm sandra.thumm@hwr-berlin.de and Falko Carl falko.carl@hwr-berlin.de.

HWR Berlin Scores with Startup Support

The network of the Startup Incubator Berlin, qualification programs, and the ever-present entrepreneurial spirit distinguish the Berlin School of Economics and Law as a leading startup university.

The Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft has published the “Gründungsradar 2022.” The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) holds its ground as one of Germany’s best startup universities, ranking among the top 10 of the 76 evaluated universities with up to 15,000 students.

Particularly well received was the diverse and active networking work of the Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB). Founders benefit from collaboration with many different partners from industry and politics, as well as from partnerships with organizations, other startup initiatives, and networks.

A further strength lies in startup awareness-raising and qualification at HWR Berlin. Engaging members of the university community — such as students, researchers, and academics — in the startup concept is a key success factor for startup support. Those interested in founding a company and members of startup teams receive targeted qualification and support at the Startup Incubator Berlin. They are guided through continuous evaluation by means of monitoring throughout the development of their startup idea, from inception to market entry and beyond. Regular milestone meetings, systematic individual coaching, and the application of the Lean Startup method help startups bring their new products, applications, and services to market readiness as quickly as possible, with minimal resource expenditure and regular customer feedback.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin, says: “Entrepreneurial education and startup formation are part of our DNA as a university of applied sciences. Our Startup Incubator has been actively and successfully supporting teams of founders for many years. With their innovative approaches and business ideas, they take on major future challenges such as climate protection, resource conservation, and care, and contribute to the transfer of knowledge from research and teaching into business and society.”

At the HWR startup campus at the Siemensstadt location, creative and interdisciplinary startups have space for collaborative idea development, prototyping, and business model development. The Startup Incubator Berlin provides coworking space, a prototype workshop, and a Design Thinking Lab, as well as financial support in the form of a Berlin Startup Scholarship.

“The mission of HWR Berlin is to closely interweave entrepreneurship education, practical startup support, and research,” emphasizes Matthias Grytzka from the management team of the startup center, adding that the strong ranking reflects the creativity and dedication of staff, startup teams, and students. “The repeated placement in the top 10 confirms that the unique support provided by HWR Berlin’s university startup ecosystem pays off,” summarizes Marvin Göldner, also a startup coach and one of the two directors of the SIB.

Currently, 15 startup teams are developing new products and services here. These include, for example, the technology provider We4All, whose founders connect 3D designers and owners of 3D printers with customers on a platform. The app developers at a2zebra are digitalizing learning concepts for children, aiming to make basic education accessible to pupils at any time and to boost their motivation. Knowledge transfer and presentation is also at the heart of what the founders of Trueffles are doing. On their new digital research platform, they create transparency and orientation through the graphical representation of search terms in a mind map model, and according to their own account enable faster research against the backdrop of the often overwhelming flood of information.

The startup center at HWR Berlin is open to students of all disciplines, from business, administration, law, and security management to engineering sciences. In addition to specific modules and specializations, the university offers the bachelor’s degree program “Company Formation and Succession” and the specialization “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” in the Full-Time MBA. The university’s Institute for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Family Businesses (EMF) has been recognized by the European Commission with the European Enterprise Promotion Award.

The Gründungsradar compared for the sixth time the profiles and offerings of startup support at German universities. The components examined include startup anchoring, startup awareness-raising, startup qualification, startup support, startup activities, monitoring and evaluation, as well as startup networks. The self-perceptions of universities regarding startup support, as well as their success criteria and demands on policymakers, are also addressed. The Stifterverband notes that universities are becoming more active in startup support overall. Around the university core, increasingly viable innovation and startup ecosystems are emerging, incorporating other stakeholders such as companies, investors, startup communities, and mentor networks. The Gründungsradar is regularly produced by the Stifterverband in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

On December 15, 2022, we hosted the last event of the year 2022 – UX-MAS – together with our friends from the BHT Startup Hub and  Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. It was a successful event, joining forces from these three universities to bring 12 startup teams on stage for a UX Testing of their products and ideas, to invite the Berlin startup ecoysytem for networking, to celebrate the successful year and to say thank you to our management – Elli from BHT Startup Hub, Sarah and Daniel from HTW InnoTechHub, Matthias and Marvin from the HWR Startup Incubator Berlin.

This past year alone, the three universities of applied sciences in Berlin supported an impressive number of 79 startups in 4 different incubation and acceleration programs! And many more to come next year…

We were also very grateful that we had the chance to collect donations for the Berliner Krebsgesellschaft through a charity bazar. Special thanks belong to the generous contributions of books by Diederichs Verlag, Kösel Verlag and Murmann Verlag for the good cause. The total amount raised that evening was 826,48 EUR – so thank you all very much for your donation, support and for joining us at this memorable event!

We wish you a merry and jolly X-Mas time, and that we’ll meet again healthy in 2023!

Female Founders Finance Day

On 17.11.2022, the first Female Founders Finance Day of the Startup Incubator Berlin in cooperation with the Berliner Sparkasse took place live at Siemensstadt Square. We started with a roundtable of experts on the topic of finance and funding and the role of women in the founding sector. To close the evening, expert and financial advisor Ines Kroll delivered an impulse talk on financial and liquidity planning.

Rise in Female Founders, but Gender Gap in Capital

It was an extraordinarily exciting evening with many facts, especially from the recently published Female Founders Monitor by the Startup Association. While 20% of founders are now women, there is still a gender gap when it comes to capital. Male teams receive 9 times as much capital as female teams.

What was the conclusion of our talk round?

There is still a lot to be done, but a great deal has already been achieved. It is important to build your own network — and to do so strategically. As an aspiring founder, build a network that can support you in your career. Find out which business angels fit your company and reach out. Angels also often enjoy serving as mentors.

Learn everything about the topic of finance — how does the entire investment landscape work? Berliner Sparkasse offers, for example, extensive (free) consulting for startups, whether it concerns loan financing, grants, or investments: berliner-sparkasse.de/startups

There are many books that explain the basic “ABCs”, for example Dealterms.vc or you can attend an Angel Academy, such as the one offered by our speaker Karla Schönicke, the FIN Academy. It is designed for future investors, which you as an aspiring founder may one day become. The knowledge will benefit you in any case, and it is an ideal place for your network.

Knowledge is Power

The IHK (Chamber of Industry and Commerce), the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB), Berliner Partner (economic development agency) and the Business Plan Competition Berlin Brandenburg also offer aspiring founders and young startups free workshops and informational events on finance and funding.

The Investitionsbank Berlin also offers a funding guide with all funding programs from the region.

Further Events

Simply follow us on LinkedIn and keep checking our events page. We regularly organize workshops and events.

Here you can find a few video recordings of our event on YouTube.

Our Talk Round Guests at a Glance

Karla Schönicke – Venture Scout at Ananda & Speedinvest & Founder Women CTO Dinner

With 10 years of experience in the Berlin startup scene, including the last 6 years in product management, Karla has seen a large number of startups and scale-ups from the inside — from 8 to 350 employees, B2B and B2C, in FinTech, SaaS, e-commerce, WealthTech and HRTech. She then transitioned from the tech industry to venture capital. Together with the Female Investors Network (FIN), she launched the first Female Business Angel Academy #FINacademy to attract more women to startup investing. In June, she joined Ananda Impact Ventures as a Venture Scout and now uses her extensive professional network to find impact startups.

Tina Weise – Trueffles GmbH

Tina Weise is Managing Director of Trueffles GmbH and is responsible for the product conception and business development of the company. Together with her team, she is building Trueffles, a community-based research platform that enables people to compile their information more efficiently, organize it more clearly, and share it with one another. Trueffles has just completed the Berlin Startup Scholarship at the Startup Incubator Berlin and is in talks with business angels for a pre-seed round.

Dr. Amelie Wiedemann – DearEmployee GmbH

Amelie Wiedemann is founder and CSO (Chief Science Officer) of DearEmployee GmbH. Healthy working is more than an ergonomic office chair. DearEmployee is a corporate health platform that supports companies in creating healthy and motivating working conditions. DearEmployee is particularly active in the D-A-CH region and has over 170 customers, including numerous large and medium-sized companies such as AXA and DEKRA.

Prof. Dr. Heike Wiesner – Professor of Business Information and Communication Systems at HWR Berlin

Transformative Technologies and Participatory Software Design are central components of Professor Heike Wiesner’s portfolio. She is a recognized expert in the field of business informatics, specializing in Business Information and Communication Systems. Additionally, she possesses specific expertise in the field of formative (accompanying) evaluation and the research area of IT & Diversity/Gender. She can point to already established national and international projects and publications and is furthermore a mentor for startup teams at the Startup Incubator Berlin.

Petra Sachse – Head of Sales, Media and Creative Industries

Petra Sachse has been working in the retail business of Berliner Sparkasse for 30 years and knows both the private customer segment and the business customer segment of Berliner Sparkasse. As a long-time manager, she has already been able to accompany many young colleagues in their professional development. Developing new talent is of great importance for companies today. Today, April 28, 2022, is Girls’ Day, the Future Day for Girls. It is a day on which girls can discover new professions that, due to the status quo, are still often considered male-dominated fields, such as computer science, industrial mechanics, or skilled trades.

When it comes to #founding and #investing, women are also underrepresented. The share of women founding startups is still below 20%!

And that’s where we come in.

We at Startup Incubator Berlin support the Girls’Day – Mädchen-Zukunftstag campaign by aiming to have at least 50% women in our #Startup teams. To that end, we asked our #femalefounders what they have to say about founding a company and what advice they would give their younger selves.

Thank you for your insights, Sara Foster and Amrei Ram from Sittery, Evoléna de Wilde d’Estmael 🌱 from Faircado, Jessica Biastoch and Sarah Gràinne Jankowsky from Brea Health GmbH , Tina Weise from Trueffles, Christina Kunz from RückMal.

The Berlin School of Economics and Law also wants to introduce entrepreneurship as a career path at an early stage. That is why various workshops are taking place today. For example, 8 girls are developing a business idea on the topic of “The School of the Future.” A very important topic! We are very excited to see what comes out of it.

Internally as well, we are committed to fostering more female-led ventures. Currently, 50% of our founders are women. In addition, our Marketing and PR Manager Cindy is dedicated to increasing the visibility of women through her platform The Bold Woman.

The Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin

In the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, founding ideas are developed to market readiness. To this end, we support academic founding teams with know-how, infrastructure, and scholarships. We create a shared platform for entrepreneurial thinking and action (mindset) together with the Berlin business community (including Siemens AG). As a lean incubator, we focus on speed in developing and validating business models with customers.

Since 2016, the Startup Incubator Berlin has been supporting founding teams with the Berlin Startup Scholarship, and now also with the REACT Startup Scholarship. More than 30 startups have benefited from this financial and non-financial support, combined with the infrastructure provided by the HWR Berlin entrepreneurship center, to successfully develop their business ideas and products. Well-known startups such as Wonder, Forget Finance, SunCrafter, and startupdetector are successfully active in the market today. Forget Finance recently closed a seed funding round of €3.8 million.
