Frequently asked questions
What the Maker Lab is, how you get in and what's still being sorted out — answered honestly. Where something isn't fixed yet, we say so and add it as soon as the framework is in place.
Who is the Maker Lab for?
The Maker Lab is the workshop of the Startup Incubator Berlin — for founders from the SIB programmes and for HWR founders-to-be who want to build something you can touch: hardware, deep tech, sensors, enclosures, trade-fair demos. It is not an open public FabLab and not a hobby offer — access runs through an SIB programme and an instruction session. External makers are welcome; we clarify the framework for that individually. More on the Workshop page.
What can I build here?
Four areas are available: 3D printing, electronics, wood & metal and textile & finish. From CAD model to printed part, from breadboard to populated PCB, from cut stock to a sturdy enclosure and a clean finish. Which specific machines will be available in the end comes out of our initial inventory — we then keep the equipment list live. All four areas at a glance: Equipment.
What does using the lab cost?
For participants of the SIB programmes, use is part of the programme framework. For external makers we clarify access and terms individually — we deliberately don't quote binding amounts here while the usage framework isn't set.
How do I get in?
In four steps: through an SIB programme → enquiry → instruction → build. Tell us briefly what you have in mind; we sort out the right area and invite you to the instruction session. Start via Workshop and Instruction.
Do I need prior experience?
No. You don't have to be a pro at the machines — that's exactly what the instruction session is for. We work by the principle of "learn by doing": you build yourself, we instruct, supervise and are there when you need us. What you need to handle on each device, we show you at the instruction session.
What do I need to bring?
Above all your project and, where possible, your files or your material. What exactly you need for a given device — from file formats to the right protective gear — is made concrete at the instruction session. We're collecting the details on the Instruction page.
Can I take part as an external maker?
In principle yes — external makers are welcome. We clarify access and terms individually, as soon as the usage framework for that is in place. Do get in touch already now if you're interested.
When is the lab open?
Currently by arrangement. Fixed opening and supervised windows aren't set yet — once they are, we'll announce them. Hours, location and a direct line into the workshop are on Hours & Contact.
