HWR Berlin Scores with Startup Support

The network of the Startup Incubator Berlin, qualification programs, and the ever-present entrepreneurial spirit distinguish the Berlin School of Economics and Law as a leading startup university.

The Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft has published the “Gründungsradar 2022.” The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) holds its ground as one of Germany’s best startup universities, ranking among the top 10 of the 76 evaluated universities with up to 15,000 students.

Particularly well received was the diverse and active networking work of the Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB). Founders benefit from collaboration with many different partners from industry and politics, as well as from partnerships with organizations, other startup initiatives, and networks.

A further strength lies in startup awareness-raising and qualification at HWR Berlin. Engaging members of the university community — such as students, researchers, and academics — in the startup concept is a key success factor for startup support. Those interested in founding a company and members of startup teams receive targeted qualification and support at the Startup Incubator Berlin. They are guided through continuous evaluation by means of monitoring throughout the development of their startup idea, from inception to market entry and beyond. Regular milestone meetings, systematic individual coaching, and the application of the Lean Startup method help startups bring their new products, applications, and services to market readiness as quickly as possible, with minimal resource expenditure and regular customer feedback.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin, says: “Entrepreneurial education and startup formation are part of our DNA as a university of applied sciences. Our Startup Incubator has been actively and successfully supporting teams of founders for many years. With their innovative approaches and business ideas, they take on major future challenges such as climate protection, resource conservation, and care, and contribute to the transfer of knowledge from research and teaching into business and society.”

At the HWR startup campus at the Siemensstadt location, creative and interdisciplinary startups have space for collaborative idea development, prototyping, and business model development. The Startup Incubator Berlin provides coworking space, a prototype workshop, and a Design Thinking Lab, as well as financial support in the form of a Berlin Startup Scholarship.

“The mission of HWR Berlin is to closely interweave entrepreneurship education, practical startup support, and research,” emphasizes Matthias Grytzka from the management team of the startup center, adding that the strong ranking reflects the creativity and dedication of staff, startup teams, and students. “The repeated placement in the top 10 confirms that the unique support provided by HWR Berlin’s university startup ecosystem pays off,” summarizes Marvin Göldner, also a startup coach and one of the two directors of the SIB.

Currently, 15 startup teams are developing new products and services here. These include, for example, the technology provider We4All, whose founders connect 3D designers and owners of 3D printers with customers on a platform. The app developers at a2zebra are digitalizing learning concepts for children, aiming to make basic education accessible to pupils at any time and to boost their motivation. Knowledge transfer and presentation is also at the heart of what the founders of Trueffles are doing. On their new digital research platform, they create transparency and orientation through the graphical representation of search terms in a mind map model, and according to their own account enable faster research against the backdrop of the often overwhelming flood of information.

The startup center at HWR Berlin is open to students of all disciplines, from business, administration, law, and security management to engineering sciences. In addition to specific modules and specializations, the university offers the bachelor’s degree program “Company Formation and Succession” and the specialization “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” in the Full-Time MBA. The university’s Institute for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Family Businesses (EMF) has been recognized by the European Commission with the European Enterprise Promotion Award.

The Gründungsradar compared for the sixth time the profiles and offerings of startup support at German universities. The components examined include startup anchoring, startup awareness-raising, startup qualification, startup support, startup activities, monitoring and evaluation, as well as startup networks. The self-perceptions of universities regarding startup support, as well as their success criteria and demands on policymakers, are also addressed. The Stifterverband notes that universities are becoming more active in startup support overall. Around the university core, increasingly viable innovation and startup ecosystems are emerging, incorporating other stakeholders such as companies, investors, startup communities, and mentor networks. The Gründungsradar is regularly produced by the Stifterverband in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

On December 15, 2022, we hosted the last event of the year 2022 – UX-MAS – together with our friends from the BHT Startup Hub and  Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin. It was a successful event, joining forces from these three universities to bring 12 startup teams on stage for a UX Testing of their products and ideas, to invite the Berlin startup ecoysytem for networking, to celebrate the successful year and to say thank you to our management – Elli from BHT Startup Hub, Sarah and Daniel from HTW InnoTechHub, Matthias and Marvin from the HWR Startup Incubator Berlin.

This past year alone, the three universities of applied sciences in Berlin supported an impressive number of 79 startups in 4 different incubation and acceleration programs! And many more to come next year…

We were also very grateful that we had the chance to collect donations for the Berliner Krebsgesellschaft through a charity bazar. Special thanks belong to the generous contributions of books by Diederichs Verlag, Kösel Verlag and Murmann Verlag for the good cause. The total amount raised that evening was 826,48 EUR – so thank you all very much for your donation, support and for joining us at this memorable event!

We wish you a merry and jolly X-Mas time, and that we’ll meet again healthy in 2023!

The Startup Incubator Berlin takes 3rd place in the competition among idea forges at the Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg. This is a great success for the founding center of HWR Berlin.

The Startup Incubator Berlin of HWR Berlin takes 3rd place in the competition among idea forges at the Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg 2022. The award was accepted at the prize ceremony on July 4 by Sandra Thumm (Network Manager Startup Incubator Berlin), Matthias Gryztka (Head of Startup Incubator Berlin) and Katrin Jahnke (Project Lead Berlin Startup Scholarship) (l. to r.). Universities in Berlin and Brandenburg are regarded as idea forges of the startup scene. The Business Plan Competition Berlin-Brandenburg (BPW) recognizes the commitment of universities in the capital and the region in the field of startup promotion every year in the Study category.

The Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB), the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), takes third place this year, with only three points separating it from the Technical University of Berlin and one from Humboldt University, ranking as the only university of applied sciences in the capital among the top 3.

Matthias Grytzka, one of the two heads of the Startup Incubator Berlin: “We are very proud that our founding teams have achieved such a strong ranking in the competition among the best idea forges in Berlin and Brandenburg. This result reflects not only the wealth of ideas and dedication of our startups and students, but also confirms that the unique support provided by HWR Berlin’s university founding ecosystem pays off. It is carried by individual professorships, through the departments, all the way to university leadership. We are thrilled that our work contributes to Berlin being regarded today as the startup capital of Europe.”

1,000 students from universities and universities of applied sciences in Berlin and Brandenburg had participated in the competition. A total of 352 business concepts were submitted, many of them by women, as the BPW reports. HWR Berlin holds its own in the strong field of participants as one of the most startup-active universities in Berlin.

“With our successful founding center, we create the framework conditions under which creative startup teams can develop well together with established companies, thus offering a crystallization point for knowledge transfer between academia and business,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin. “We want the spark of the entrepreneurial spirit to spread to the degree programs of our university. That is why the founding center, why interdisciplinary entrepreneurial education is so important to us,” says Zaby.

The founding center of HWR Berlin creates space for business ideas to emerge and offers the necessary broad-based, intensive support to develop them further. In this attractive environment, those interested in founding become teams and ideas become market-ready products and services. The exchange between startups is a central element of this. When everything goes well, a company is ultimately founded. “The team and the entrepreneurial spirit of our Startup Incubator provide the opportunity and contribute significantly to enabling founders to realize their dreams and ideas,” says Grytzka.

What makes this startup hub, with locations at Campus Schöneberg and the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt, special is that the teams work according to the Lean Startup method and are coached accordingly. At its core, it is about involving potential customers early on in order to align the development of products and services closely with market needs from the very beginning. Financial assistance is available during the founding phase through the Berlin Startup Scholarship. The strategy is paying off: approximately 95 percent of the supported startups establish incorporated companies and themselves become economic actors.

“Startups have great strategic importance for Berlin and the region as a business location. Spin-offs from academia play a special role in this. The transfer between research and practice drives innovation, is an engine of structural change, and creates the jobs of the future,” emphasizes Zaby.

In the 2018 Founding Radar of the Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft, the Berlin School of Economics and Law emerged as one of the best universities of applied sciences (HAW) in Germany. With funding from the Federal Ministry, it can continue and further develop its successful startup promotion, drawing and setting impulses as a member of the network of successful German founding universities. HWR Berlin is focusing on three priorities for strategic expansion:

  • HWR Berlin Startup Boosters: a regional network that directly benefits the supported startups
  • Open Startup Academy: a regional network that ensures the institutionalized anchoring of HWR Berlin in the regional startup ecosystem
  • International Startup Community: knowledge and personnel transfer between partner universities to support the regional network.

The Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin

At the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, founding ideas are developed to market readiness. To this end, we support academic founding teams with know-how, infrastructure, and scholarships. We create a shared platform for entrepreneurial thinking and action (mindset) with Berlin’s business community (including Siemens AG). As a lean incubator, we focus on speed in developing and validating business models with customers.

Since 2016, the Startup Incubator Berlin has been supporting founding teams with the Berlin Startup Scholarship, now also with the REACT Startup Scholarship. More than 30 startups have benefited from this financial and non-financial support, combined with the infrastructure provided by the founding center of HWR Berlin, to successfully develop their business ideas and products. Well-known startups such as Wonder, Forget Finance, SunCrafter, and startupdetector are today successfully active in the market. Founding teams can apply until April 17, 2022 for the Berlin Startup Scholarship and the REACT Startup Scholarship. For six months, the Berlin Startup Scholarship provides 2,000 euros per month per person from funds provided by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the State of Berlin. The REACT Startup Scholarship is funded from the same sources in cooperation with the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (BHT) and is specifically aimed at founders in the healthcare industry. The funding period here is nine months.

Application & Requirements

In addition to an academic degree and a place of residence in Berlin, a prerequisite for applying for the scholarships is a first prototype or a prototype-like process — that is, initial concrete ideas for an entrepreneurial solution to a relevant problem. During the funding period, the teams at the Startup Incubator Berlin receive extensive support and optimal conditions to further develop prototypes and business ideas using the lean startup methodology and peer learning.

Infrastructure & Coaching

The coworking spaces of the HWR Berlin founding center are located in Siemensstadt ² at Rohrdamm in Berlin. At this generously and modernly equipped startup hub, teams can use a Design Thinking Lab, a Mixed Reality (AR/VR) Lab, a Smart Device & Robotic Lab, and a prototype workshop. The coaching team of the Startup Incubator Berlin, external consultants, academic mentors from HWR Berlin, as well as sponsors from the large partner network of business companies, public institutions, and associations support the teams. In addition, there are special training offerings and regular event formats such as UX testing, investment pitches, diversity formats, and co-founder matching.

Application Period & Initial Meeting

Interested founders can apply for the scholarships starting now. Teams must consist of at least two and a maximum of three people. An individual preliminary meeting with the coaching team of the Startup Incubator Berlin is mandatory for the application. Appointments for this must be arranged via the SIB website by April 8, 2022. Founders will receive concrete tips for preparing the application documents during the meeting. Afterwards, the application documents are to be uploaded.

The Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin

At the Startup Incubator of HWR Berlin, startup ideas are developed to market readiness. To this end, we support academic founding teams with know-how, infrastructure, and scholarships. We create a shared platform for entrepreneurial thinking and action (mindset) together with Berlin’s business community (including Siemens AG). As a lean incubator, we focus on speed in developing and validating business models with customers.

Since 2016, the Startup Incubator Berlin has been supporting founding teams with the Berlin Startup Scholarship, and now also with the REACT Startup Scholarship. More than 30 startups have used this financial and non-material support, combined with the infrastructure provided by the founding center of HWR Berlin, to successfully develop their business ideas and products. Well-known startups such as Wonder, Forget Finance, SunCrafter, and startupdetector are successfully active in the market today. Forget Finance recently closed a seed funding round of €3.8 million.

The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) expresses its deeply felt solidarity with the entire Ukrainian population, and especially with its partner universities Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University in Kharkiv, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and Odessa National Polytechnic University.

With immediate effect, HWR Berlin is taking initial concrete measures to support Ukrainian students as well as researchers and academics. These include free guest study for students from Ukrainian universities affected by the war in Ukraine, or participation in the university’s German language courses to attain a C1 language level for individuals holding a Ukrainian university entrance qualification. The university is also supporting student initiatives for the reception, accommodation, or care of people who have fled the war in Ukraine with additional resources.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin: “HWR Berlin is, out of deep conviction, a particularly internationally oriented university. We stand firmly by the side of our Ukrainian partners and wish to expand our academic cooperation.” He adds: “We are following the recommendations of German academic organizations and will suspend cooperation projects with Russian universities. This is deeply regrettable, as we know that large parts of the Russian academic community condemn this war of aggression. We will continue to maintain our friendly relations with our Russian colleagues.”

HWR Berlin currently has approximately 50 students with Ukrainian citizenship enrolled. Through its university partnerships, HWR Berlin also regularly welcomes exchange students as well as professors from Ukraine.

Startup Incubator Berlin under new leadership.

The founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law now has a dual leadership with Marvin Göldner and Matthias Grytzka. The areas of entrepreneurship, startup support, and technology transfer are being strengthened.

Berlin, January 28, 2022. With Marvin Göldner and Matthias Grytzka, two experienced startup coaches are taking over the leadership of the Startup Incubator Berlin at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin). Since January 2022, they have been responsible for the entire operational management of the founding center, which provides entrepreneurship-minded students with the framework, networks, and funding they need to develop their ideas through to market-ready prototypes.

The strategic concept development and funding acquisition for HWR Berlin will also be strengthened, with the aim of further advancing HWR Berlin’s profile as an entrepreneurial university.

Marvin Göldner

“I personally prepared a startup at an incubator in Munich and know from my own experience what is important for startups in the early stage. I am excited about the opportunities we can offer to those interested in founding a company and startup teams at the SIB. I look forward to further developing the university’s founding center and unlocking new growth potential with our great team. As an Innovation & Strategy Developer, I want to optimize coaching methods so that young startups at the SIB can reach the market faster.”

Matthias Grytzka

“I have been working at the SIB for almost five years and helped shape the HWR founding center at the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin in Siemensstadt. We provide young startup teams with an attractive co-working space, a Design Thinking Lab, and a lab for developing app applications, a prototyping workshop, and above all coaching and financial support. That is simply wonderful. I am looking forward to the ever-new creative startup teams for whose success we are laying the foundation here. Innovation is not a coincidence.”

The Startup Incubator Berlin, the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law, is a workshop and experimentation space for those interested in starting a business. Here, ideas, concepts, and the development of prototypes are supported, and founders and potential business partners are connected. It is a place of creativity, encounter, and exchange. With the Berlin Startup Scholarship and the EXIST scholarship program, founders are financially supported. The incubator is aimed at everyone who is just at the beginning of their founding idea as well as those who are already in the active founding phase.

“Build, Measure, Learn” – according to Eric Ries, the mantra for successful startups. The three buzzwords were the inspiration for our talented colleague Falko, who together with his band Yuri & Neil turned them into a catchy song and a funny video.

“Remember what Eric said…” goes the lyrics. Silicon Valley entrepreneur and author Ries co-founded the Lean Startup methodology, which is the most important guiding principle for us at Startup Incubator Berlin. Taking a “lean” approach to founding a startup means advancing the development of a new business idea with minimal resource requirements, in short cycles and with regular customer feedback, in order to quickly reach a market-ready offering. According to Ries, these continuous phases of development, validation, and learning (“Build, Measure, Learn”) ensure success. His book The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses was published in 2011.

Falko has been active as the singer of Yuri & Neil since 2014; the band’s name is made up of the first names of the two space pioneers Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong. In 2017, the five musicians recorded the single Dolphin, and the music video reached a million viewers in a short time. Appearances and interviews on German television followed (including ZDF, RBB, RTL2), as well as a record deal with a major label. At Startup Incubator Berlin, Falko works as a startup coach and is responsible for organizing our prototyping labs, and he oversees our newest format “JumpStart“!

We are quite certain that “Build, Measure, Learn (The Lean Band)” will also become an earworm in no time — not just in the startup scene! Listen and see for yourself: the latest work by Yuri & Neil.

For sharing, replaying, and saving – the song is also available here on all major music platforms.

The transfer between academia and business is part of the DNA of HWR Berlin, and startup foundations are one form of this. At the Transfer Day on June 4, 2021, the Startup Incubator Berlin offers three exciting startup pitches followed by Q&A with founders and HWR mentors.
Under the motto “Shaping the Future Together,” the HWR Berlin Transfer Day focuses on future development in the German economy, teaching, and research. In this context, the Startup Incubator Berlin presents itself from its location in Siemensstadt2 with selected startups from current and previous funding rounds. Each team is introduced by their university mentor and presents their founding venture in a pitch. Afterwards, there is an opportunity for audience questions and direct discussion with the teams and mentors.

Bearcover supports nursing home staff with robots during nightly routine checks and monitoring tasks. Bearcover’s robots operate in corridors and can perform basic health and movement checks — without entering residents’ rooms. Staff can then prioritize care based on real-time requirements. This allows robots to maximize the time caregivers spend with residents. Staff know where they are needed next and do not have to worry about missing something.

HWR Berlin as the only Berlin university in the “Regional Networking” funding focus among winners of the BMWi competition EXIST. Major success for Startup Incubator Berlin and Entrepreneurship Education

The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) will receive two million euros over the next four years to strategically expand its startup support programs. 220 universities and universities of applied sciences from all federal states had participated in the funding competition of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). HWR Berlin entered with its concept titled “Boosting Startups @ HWR Berlin” in the “Regional Networking” category.

“The strong performance of universities of applied sciences in the funding competition to expand their startup centers underlines once again how much the federal government relies on practice-oriented approaches when it comes to startups and startup support,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin. “Being counted among the winners is both recognition and motivation. We are very pleased to have been the only Berlin university to succeed in the funding line for advanced startup universities, and we will use the funding to further expand our offerings,” says Zaby.

The goal is to strengthen the startup culture in the capital region by integrating HWR Berlin with players in the regional startup ecosystem and international partner universities. Christian Gurol, head of Startup Incubator Berlin, the startup center of HWR Berlin, considers the team and the exchange between startups to be key success factors. “With our startup center, we provide the platform and broad-based, intensive support so that startup enthusiasts become teams, ideas become market-ready projects, and companies are founded,” he explains.

The special feature of this startup hub, with locations at Campus Schöneberg and at the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt, is that the teams work according to the Lean Startup method. At its core, this is about involving potential customers early on in order to align the development of products and services closely with market needs from the very beginning. The strategy is paying off: approximately 95 percent of startups establish limited liability companies after the “Berlin Startup Scholarship” and become economic actors themselves. “Startups are of high strategic importance for Germany as a business location: they drive innovation, are the engine of structural change, and create the jobs of the future,” emphasized Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier upon announcing the winners of the EXIST-Potentiale funding competition.

In the 2018 Startup Radar of the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany, the Berlin School of Economics and Law emerged as one of the best universities of applied sciences in Germany. With the funds from the Federal Ministry, it can continue and further develop its successful startup support, and draw inspiration as a member of the network of successful German startup universities. HWR Berlin is focusing on four priorities for strategic expansion:

• HWR Berlin Startup Boosters: a regional network that directly benefits the supported startups
• Spin-off of HWR Berlin for commercial exploitation, in order to offer commercial activities on a demand-oriented basis
• Open Startup Academy: a regional network that ensures the institutionalized integration of HWR Berlin in the regional startup ecosystem
• International Startup Community: knowledge and people transfer between partner universities to support the regional network.

“We create the framework conditions under which creative startup teams can develop well together with established companies, and thus offer a crystallization point for knowledge transfer between academia and industry,” says Zaby.
